Calvin found an immediate fit with running upon entering Rosemount High School (MN) under 100 pounds after he chose to cease risking his life on the football field. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 2016 with a degree in biology, having competed for the Oles in XC and track and earning All-American honors in cross country (‘15) as well as contributing to the team’s national championship (‘13). Since graduating, Calvin began pursuing his passion for coaching. He spent two cross country seasons coaching the boys and girls high school teams at Rosemount before joining his alma mater as an Assistant Coach for two more years.
His experience has led to a philosophy predicated on forming a meaningful, collaborative relationship with athletes. Calvin believes in empowering others to pursue their goals with a drive from within mentality that emphasizes the process and self-improvement over external validation. He encourages his runners to aim high and throw fear to the wayside.
Calvin currently works as Graduate Assistant Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Programs at Augsburg University under Head Coach and MN Distance Elite runner Meghan Peyton. While serving as assistant coach at Augsburg, he also studies the Master of Arts in Leadership Program.
He is also heavily involved with the local running community, working part time for the local retailer Run N Fun and competing for their elite club team. Recently, Run N Fun placed 6th at 2019 USATF Club Cross Country Championship at Lehigh University. He also recently ran a personal best half marathon of 66:53 at Houston. He views the marathon as an exciting new challenge down the road.
