Ty Andrews Smashes Speed Record on World’s 8th Highest Peak: Mt. Manaslu, 8163m

Mt. Manaslu, Himalaya, Nepal – September 19, 2024 – Pro mountain athlete Ty Andrews (La Sportiva / Chaski), has set a new world record for the fastest ascent of Mt. Manaslu (8163m), the world’s eighth highest peak, completing the climb in an astonishing 9 hours and 52 minutes. This feat, accomplished without supplemental oxygen, shattered the previous record, set by Pemba Gelje Sherpa, by more than two hours.

Ty left Manaslu Base Camp at 3:30 am local time, climbing over 3,300 vertical meters of steep, treacherous terrain to reach the summit at 1:22 pm. On the summit, he made an emotional call to his parents, sharing the moment from the “Death Zone”.

“Standing on the summit, I was overwhelmed with gratitude -- and seriously out of breath” Ty said. “This was a dream realized after a tough failure last year. I’m thankful for the support of my family, friends, and team, especially my climbing partner Chris, expedition leader Dawa Steven Sherpa, and agent and friend Jim – none of this would have been possible without them.”

In 2023, Ty first attempted the speed record on Manaslu but was forced to turn back after illness and fatigue derailed his effort. This year, he came back stronger, better prepared, and more determined. Training at altitude in Ecuador and testing his endurance in Peru and France, Ty arrived in Nepal ready to push his limits.

This record is the latest in a series of high-altitude achievements for Ty, who also set world records on Aconcagua and Kilimanjaro in 2023. Beyond the Himalaya, Ty has a unique history for a mountain athlete, with more than a decade of world-class results as a track and road runner. Looking forward, Ty is all-in on the world of high peaks. He has his sights set on the ultimate challenge: Mt. Everest.
